I asked the question: 'What draws people to public places?' and searched
for answers.
Corridart: Art in the street, space of opportunity for artists.
Organised by architect-artist Charney for 1976 Montreal Olympiad
Along 5.5 miles of Sherbrooke Street.
Crystal Palace: Wonder, curiosity, discovery, randomness.
Estrangement: 'encounter sufficient otherness to recognize strangeness
in oneself' (ai, winter/spring 2000)
Vito Acconci: His installments attract passerby's
as opposed to just museum-goers.
Absence of hierarchy makes the space more flexible. (Architecture, January
2001).
Movable Chairs in the Jardin de Luxembourg, Bryant Park, New York.
Childhood Memory: Polish story book about a boy who retreats under an
umbrella-like pear tree. The pears provided him with sustenance and a sweet
smell. The tree's branches provided shelter and privacy. Light sparkled
through the leaves of the tree.
Even adults hunger for such a safe, secluded, calming spot. Can
discovery happen more than once? Does the space need to change to maintain
its magic?
La Fontaine Medici: Calm, shady oassis in the Jardin de Luxembourg.
Never loses its charm.
