McGill University Community Sustainment
Introduction
Our mandate:
To find for MUCS suitable potential sites for their residence
AND
To study les Habitations Jeanne-Mance as a possible area for integration of the MUCS project.

Methodology
We first identified neighbourhoods with high community organization.
We then looked for clusters of areas with appropriate demographics and economies
We visited these areas on foot to look for buildings and land.
Finally, we consulted with knowledgable community members to identify further possible sites.

G.I.S. Results
Some Recommendations
MUCS may want to consider:
GOING BIGGER: Coordinating with other universities
GOING SMALLER: Splitting the project up into a number of 20-40 unit modules on different sites
WORKING WITH GRTs: Letting
  professionals do some of the
  legwork.

Several Identified Sites
No 1. The Chest Institute, Plateau
No 2.- Mont Royal Bldg., Plateau
No 3.- Halbro Building, Plateau
No 4.- Industrial Bldg., Rosemont
No 5.- Tree Storage Bldg., Rosemont
No 6.- Industrial Bldg., Hochelaga

History ContinuedŠ
Mayor Drapeau has a competing plan smaller buildings w/gardens vs towers
Area had been crowded, many homes w/ poor ventilation, light & plumbing
End result is a compromise construction starts 1958.
Instead of 1388 units, only 800 built
  to replace 1383 torn down.

Issues to Consider
The UQAM factor why should McGill students live next to two French schools?
The political factor why should private developers and others be frozen out if MUCS gets in?
The resident factor do HJM residents want new neighbours?
